The cooler was invented in Australia, where it is generally called an esky.

Most commonly a cooler is simply an insulated box, used to keep food or drinks cool.

They are usually made from interior and exterior shells of plastic, with a hard foam in between. They also come in sizes from small personal models to large family sizes with wheels. Disposable coolers are made from 1" thick styrene foam.  Most coolers have molded-in handles, and some have shoulder straps.
